Self-checking high water level controller
About boiler operation and control, rules and regulations may vary due to national application. However, it is clearly stated in the regulations that when there is a high safety issue, the boiler should operate safely without human assistance. In order to set the high or low water level of the boiler, the design conditions should be carefully checked. Any quantity above or below the boiler design limits may result in hazardous events or inefficient work operations. These are the possible shortcomings of uncontrolled high water levels:
• Transferring water to steam may cause malfunctions due to fouling and/or failure of steam system components (valves, piping, systems, processes, etc.).
• Moist and dirty steam can contaminate or destroy the steam produced. Wet steam may increase the thickness of the water film, which may reduce heat transfer and may eventually result in lower processing temperatures. This will result in inefficiencies, processing duration and unit cost increases.
• Overfilled boilers can cause splashes, damage during the process, and personal injury.
The following results may occur due to all of the above deficiencies:
Steam production quality is poor, low productivity, poor product quality. Increased maintenance costs for plants and components, damage to steam systems, and possible personal injury.
To prevent all of these possible defects, use a high water level controller to control the pump, turn off the burner, close the water supply valve, and issue an alarm to warn personnel.
Precautions taken may vary depending on facility requirements.
