The universal joint expansion joint is designed to allow angular rotation in any plane by using two pairs of hinges fixed to the common floating universal joint ring.
Simply put, a double gimbal expansion joint consists of two single gimbal expansion joints interconnected by an intermediate pipe. The advantage of this assembly is the ability to compensate for large lateral displacements in any plane at each end. Since the universal joint is connected at both ends of the bellows, the thermal expansion of the intermediate tube cannot be compensated by the general-purpose expansion joint, but must be compensated by the adjacent pipe.
Compensation displacement
This type of expansion joint is used to compensate for axial and lateral displacement of all planes. The amount of lateral deflection depends on the number of bellows convolutions on each side of the expansion joint. This amount of deflection can also be increased by changing the length of the intermediate tube. Hinge and universal joints provide proper positioning and prevent inaccurate installation.
Benefits of double universal joint expansion joints
Protecting pipeline systems from collapse and damage by compensating for seismic motion (earthquake) and large lateral and angular displacements
Corrugated tube displacement is more controllable
Adapting internal flow lining for speed issues
The anchor only needs to absorb the spring force
The pressure thrust is limited by hardware
